Dr. Ella L. Toombs, a native of Chicago, Illinois, graduated from Ohio State University College of Medicine with Honors from the Office of Minority Student Affairs; she also served as President of the Student National Medical Association. Dr. Toombs interned at Medical College of Georgia then spent two years in Internal Medicine Residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Her Dermatology Residency was completed at Howrd University Hospital where she performed the first dermabrasion and chemical peels.
Dr. Toombs was selected to a Dermatology Clinical Research Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. During her fellowship she was active in clinical trials involving Accutane, Etretinate and Gamma interferon. Additionally, Dr. Toombs pioneered the use of electrosurgery in the treatment of unresponsive Darier's Disease receiving a Young Investigator Special Recognition in Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology.
Dr. Toombs was a dermatology reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for 13 years. While there, she was the lead reviewer for the first drug approved in the US to treat wrinkles. SHe was also Dermatologic Consultant for filler substances, alphahydroxy acids, varicose veins, Botox, cosmetics and others. Additionally, Dr. Toombs contributed to drafting the Federal Register document on Liposuction.
In her private practice, Aesthetic Dermatology of Dupont Circle, Dr. Toombs cares for patients concerned about their health and appearance. Her speciality is aesthetic "beautiful" dermatology, particularly liposculpture and other surgical and non surgical appearanced cnhancing treatments. Dr. Toombs was an instructor in an American Academy of Dermatology supported liposuction course.
More recently Dr. Toombs has been appointed to the position of Assisstant Professor of Dermatology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Toombs has given presentations on liposuction, cosmetics and cosmetic dermatology at the National Medical Association, Medical ReadingClub, and Department of Health and Human Services. As an active participant in the medical community, Dr. Toombs is a Fellow of the American Academy serving as a past member of the FDA Task Force, past Chair of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Council for Communications, International Society for Dermatologic Surgery, DC Dermatologic Society, National Medical Association - Dermatology Section, Med-Chi Society of the District of Columbia and the Daniel Hale Williams Medical Reading Club.
Dr. Toombs' expertise and insight has been featured in print and online venues including: Glamour, Medemiselle, Shape, Better Homes and Gradens, American Health, Heart and Soul, FDA Consumer, Cosmetics and Toiletries and WebMD. Dr. Toombs has been interviewed on national and local television and radio shows on topics ranging from liposuction to the overuse of antibiotics.
Dr. Toombs' community outreach activities include being an active participant in the American Academy of Dermatology's Minority Mentorship Program, supporting struggling artists through the Washington Project for the Arts and Participation as a medical provider for SCORES which provides cosmetic and dermatologic surgery to victims of domestic violence.
